Marin Academy Visual Arts Center
San Rafael, CA
Completed 2002
The Visual Arts Center comprises complementary studio pavilions in play with each other and the site. The two buildings link a shady terrace at one end of the site to a heritage oak tree at the opposite end. Extended roof planes, a terraced ground plane, and an exterior exhibition space shape pedestrian flow through the site and create a dynamic connection between exterior and interior. The studios – for painting, drawing, ceramics, and photography – all have large, glazed doors to allow the courtyard to work as a teaching and presentation space.
