Yin Young Residence

Castro Valley, CA
Completed 2007

The owner of this Eichler house, a landscape architect, collaborated on the reinvention of the house and garden: tearing away poor additions and bringing back the original intent. The design retains existing sustainable features, such as radiant floor slabs, and incorporates new elements: insulation, high-performance windows, and cork flooring. The roof is redesigned to maintain the characteristic Eichler profile, but now spans an open floor plan and holds new electrical/data cabling. New landscape shapes outdoor rooms using paving patterns, rough cast walls, and grasses to give textural interest and provide privacy.
