Harker School Athletic Center

San Jose, CA

The Harker School Performing Arts Center and Athletic Center together create a vibrant new gateway to the High School campus. The buildings, through the use of welcoming public spaces, daylighting, acoustic shaping, and natural materials, create warm, flexible, and intimately scaled communal spaces.

The double-court Athletic Center provides state-of-the-art spaces for training and competitions. Rich natural wood finishes and plentiful daylight enhance the sense of wellness that comes from physical activity. Highly insulated and with nearly half the building tucked below grade, the Athletic Center features sawtooth clerestory windows along the north façade that deliver soft, indirect natural light. The angled roof is optimally oriented to support a large photovoltaic array, generating clean energy that played a key role in achieving LEED Gold certification for both buildings.
